In the spot with the Dota-League – Part 2

With the current DotA Razer Global Challenge going into its exciting round of 64, we’ll take you behind the scenes of our massive tournament by talking to the two main men behind the RGC in this two part special.

Today, we welcome back Moritz ‘Mooseman’ Zimmermann & Nils ‘Rage_nox’ Hellhund – the brains, legs and hands behind the successful DotA Razer Global Challenge. This is part 2 of our interview with the guys from Dota-League.

Razer: With HoN and LoL coming up soon, how do you think the DotA fans will react to this?

Rage_nox: I think both games are definitely enjoyable, at least this is what I can say from my personal experience.

It’s like Counter Strike 1.6 and Counter Strike: Source, the communities will co-exist. You can’t create an artificial community. Both, LoL and Hon Communities will take years to get there where Dota is now.

Mooseman:
Comparing DotA with HoN and LoL is like comparing Chess with Checkers which are totally different games that look similar while one is much easier to learn and play.

HoN and LoL both reach out to a different groups of casual gamers and can actually not be compared to DotA at all. In the end these games should not be compared at all and can co-exist easily just like Chess and Checkers.

Razer: What is the DotA League planning to do in the future for the DotA community?

Mooseman: We are definitely planning to put our long-term experience with DotA and its community into action at LAN events more often. Seeing matches and its players live on stage is just something different. Due to DotA´s huge community and fan base, it makes perfect sense. Also I am being bugged about the return of our offline event “DotA-league Masters” by the pros nearly every day. They hunger for more!

Razer: Could you name a celebrity who plays DotA?

Rage_nox: We definitely know that Basshunter used to play on DotA-league.com. No, we will not tell you his account name!

Razer: I’m sure he must be very wary of fanboys when he plays now! Any last words for the DotA community?

Mooseman: Thanks a lot to Razer for the interview. Thank you to all our friends in the DotA scene and special thanks to IceFrog for creating such a great game that improves constantly and makes Dota-League more and more fun as it evolves!

Rage_nox: Shoutouts to everyone in the DotA community! Thank you for supporting DotA and IceFrog over the past years and for helping to turn DotA into such a brillant game. Greetings to my DotA buddies in the German and European scene and of course thanks a lot Razer for the interview.

As the DotA Razer Global Challenge moves into the business end of the season, we will have our very own Razer|Furryfish* doing a weekly coverage of the matches. The first match starts out on the 19th of August, 2010 so look out for Razer|Furryfish*’s column on the Cult of Razer Blog and the Dota-League.

In the spot with the Dota-League – Part 1

With the current DotA Razer Global Challenge going into its exciting round of 64, we’ll take you behind the scenes of our massive tournament by talking to the two main men behind the RGC in this two part special.

Everyone, say hello to Moritz ‘Mooseman’ Zimmermann & Nils ‘Rage_nox’ Hellhund – the brains, legs and hands behind the successful DotA Razer Global Challenge. Dive right in to find out more this dynamic duo and their stellar team.

Razer: Hello guys! Tell us more about the good people of the DotA League and the DotA Razer Global Challenge.

Mooseman & Rage_nox: We’re made up of Mooseman (as the head of Dota-League), Rage_nox (the Dota-League manager), neXXus (chief coder of Dota-League) and two external well known DotA tournament organisers, Beast_Pete (from WDC, SMM, EDC) and Colborn (from SMM and EDC).

And of course there is quite a large number of admins for each region from all over the world taking care of daily matches and players who need support. In total we have about 30 admins working on this every day in a time period of roughly 4 months.

Razer: Was the planning of such a huge tournament tough?

Mooseman: Planning and kicking off the RGC tournament did not take too long. The major amount of work comes from managing thousands of players every day whom all want and need attention. We need to do this in order to grant the best experience for the players.

After all, the DotA players are the important ones in this tournament and should enjoy playing here.

The RGC is nothing without our participants.

Razer: Could you name some favorites that the community are watching closely?

Rage_nox: For me, it is very hard to estimate due to the international appeal of this tournament. There are of course well known all-time favorites in each region and for example we had face-ups between European and Asian teams lately but most of those were at Lan events.

To name a few teams from different regions, we think teams like LOST, MYM, DTS, AzN, Mineski, Nirvana and LGD.sGty will be among the strongest teams of the tournament.

Razer: Are you surprised by the reception of the RGC?

Mooseman: I was not so much surprised about the amount of teams which signed up in total, since we have had large tournaments before. I was rather surprised about how extremely fast the tournament slots were filled. It was 423 teams that signed up in the first 24 hours which is nearly 3,000 players.

Reaching nearly 1,200 teams in total is a real blast of course since this is by far the largest online DotA tournament worldwide. As the organisers of this huge event, it makes us very proud. Of course we are aiming to beat this amount in our next tournament!

And so ends the first part of our chat with the organisers behind the DotA Razer Global Challenge. Check back soon for more by Mooseman and Rage_nox as they tell us about the future of DotA and celebrity DotA enthusiasts.
